What Is Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance covers the cost of unexpected veterinary treatment for your pet.  This includes:

• Veterinary fees for illness and injury including hospitalisation.

• Third party liability - this covers the cost of any damage or injury your pet may cause - for example biting someone, worrying sheep, damage to vehicles.

• Death from illness or injury or loss by theft or straying

• Boarding fees if you are hospitalised

• Cost of advertising and reward if lost

• Holiday cancellation due to serious illness of your pet.

Why do you need pet insurance?

Pet insurance is one of the most valuable types of insurance as you are much more likely to have to make a claim than on a home insurance policy or a car insurance policy. This is because on average one in three pets need urgent veterinary treatment each year, and on average most pets have around three major illnesses or injuries in their lifetime.

Unfortunately there is no National Health Service for pets so owners have to pay for their pet's treatment costs themselves. The cost of fixing a broken leg nowadays, for example, can run into hundreds if not thousands of pounds.

Pet insurance allows you to budget monthly rather than face unexpected bills you might not be able to afford. Pet insurance is increasingly necessary to allow your pet to benefit from the latest advances in diagnostic technologies and treatments. Third party liability for dogs is increasingly important in case of legal action - should your dog bite someone you could be liable for thousands of pounds in damages.
